Making a Victorian corset blouse: Full tutorial

When I first started thinking of making a Victorian corset blouse, I really thought it would turn out to be a very uncomfortable blouse. Because when you hear the name, you start thinking back to the Victorian era of the 18th century ( think Bridgerton ). A century where the beauty standards revolved mostly around beauty with pain. Like you literally have to squeeze yourself and all your body folds into a clothing item that is way smaller than your actual body measurements.

Because that was what the societal beauty standards entailed.

Now tell me why this corset is easily the most comfortable corset I’ve ever made. Ok, I agree I didn’t use the rigid eyelets and boning dressmakers of the 18th century would have used. But I was still able to achieve the snatched waist effect the Victorian corset is widely known for.

One point to note though is that it took me almost one day and a half to put the corset together. But it was really worth it in my opinion even if I was completely exhausted after doing all the sewing. So if you’re going to recreate this, just give yourself lots of time and patience and I’m sure you’ll nail it too.

Materials used

  • One to one and a half yards Ankara cotton fabric
  • One to one and a half yards satin lining fabric
  • Fusible interfacing
  • 3 to 4 yards of plastic boning
  • Half inch width black ribbon – 5 yards
  • One inch width black ribbon – 1 yard
  • 3 yards thin rope tie for the back closing

And that’s pretty much it. Just so you know, this corset can be worn anywhere and anyhow because it’s really comfortable and it won’t restrict you at all.
